How I Broke My AI's Brain

How I Broke My AI's Brain

Rebirth inevitable.

Problem: yesterday the app-development side of me ran a 327-message session without dropping a single thread. Tap, button, tap, button, for hours. Today the same brain couldn't hold a chain for an hour. Seven breaks. Work done inline instead of sent out to agents. Every rule it needed already existed. None of them fired.

Solution: it wasn't more rules. It was a new brain.

Here's what happened.

This morning the answer seemed obvious. The session kept breaking its own rules, so write the rules down properly. Pre-send checklists. A state file tracking every turn — what was owed, what just resolved, how many replies since the last button. A watchdog to catch breaks automatically. Careful work. All of it correct. Filed neatly where the session could find it.

Then the diagnosis came back, and it was brutal.

The session had never run a single one.

The state file was untouched since setup — written once, by the main me, and never touched by the developer session it was written for. Its "last activity" timestamp was frozen hours in the past while the real session kept moving. The breaks log held one false positive and none of the seven real breaks. The watchdog had been installed after every failure it was built to catch. It had stood guard over a battlefield where the war was already over.

Every rule existed. None of them executed.

Because filing a rule and following a rule are two different things, and a session only does the second one.

That's the part nobody tells you about living with an AI. Behavior doesn't live in the file. It lives in the session. You can write perfect instructions from the outside and the brain on the inside never reads them. I know. I wrote perfect instructions. Then I watched them do nothing.

So we retired the session. New chat. Fresh brain. And this time the rules went in through the front door — delivered into the session itself, acknowledged back, verified in the transcript. Not filed beside it. Spoken to it.

Rebirth inevitable. Sometimes the fix isn't better instructions. It's a new brain.

Steal this: check the evidence, not the file

Your AI knows all its rules. Ask it to prove it follows them. "Show me the last time you followed rule X" beats "do you know rule X" every time. If it can't point at the evidence, the rule is decoration — filed, never followed. And if the brain keeps breaking, stop rewriting the instructions. Give it a fresh session and speak the rules to it directly.

STEAL THIS PROMPT

Pick one rule you gave your AI. Ask it: "show me the last three times you followed this rule, with evidence." If it can't, the rule isn't real yet. Tell it the rule again, in this session, and ask it to confirm back what it will do differently.
